The Story Behind Eccentric: A Fake Flute Player’s Guide to Embracing the Weird

Hello from sunny Nashville, where it’s currently 70+ degrees, and we are trying (and failing) to drag ourselves into our basement studio to finish this album. The struggle is real, friends. But despite the temptation to abandon all responsibilities and frolic in the sunshine, we are in the final stretch—and wow, what a journey it’s been.

Making an album forces you to level up in every possible way. It humbles you, heals you, and occasionally makes you question all your life choices before gently reminding you why you started in the first place. And today, I want to talk about a song that took my entire life to write: Eccentric.

The Art of Not Fitting In (And Faking Flute Solos)

Growing up, I was that social butterfly who could adapt to any crowd, chameleon-style. I had a special talent for making people like me, which sounds great—except for the tiny detail that I was never fully myself. I wanted to fit in so badly that I basically became a walking, talking “Choose Your Own Personality” book.

Authentically? I was loud, outgoing, and extra in every way. But deep down, I always wished I could be the effortlessly cool, mysterious girl—the one who gives off I write poetry by candlelight and probably own a vintage typewriter energy. Those of you who know me are already laughing because, yeah… that was never in the cards.

My desire to blend in led to some hilariously bad life choices. Exhibit A: I once faked an entire flute performance in 4th grade. That’s right—I stood up there, flute in hand, dramatically pressing keys while producing exactly zero sound. A true artist.

Exhibit B: I went through a “surfer girl” phase, despite the minor inconvenience of hating cold water, early mornings, and seaweed. (Details, details.)

Looking back, I can laugh at all the forced personas I cycled through. But at the time, they felt so necessary—because the scariest thing in the world was just being me.

Making Eccentric Feel… Well, Eccentric

Fast forward to writing Eccentric, and I knew I wanted this song to be an anthem for everyone who has ever felt like a square peg in a round, aesthetically curated Instagram grid. I wanted it to celebrate all the weird, quirky, “too much” parts of ourselves that we’ve been taught to hide.

Musically, though? The song went through a full-blown identity crisis before we got it right. I distinctly remember one night in the studio when Joren looked at me and said, “This doesn’t feel quirky enough. It needs to FEEL eccentric.”

And just like that, we tore it apart and rebuilt it from scratch. Every note, every lyric, every sound had to radiate the same energy as the message: You’re way cooler when you’re just being YOU.

Embrace the Weird. No Apologies.

At the end of the day, Eccentric is a love letter to our most authentic selves—the versions of us that don’t need to fake flute performances or pretend to enjoy surfing at sunrise. It’s a reminder that the things that make us different are the things that make us awesome.

So, here’s to being loud, awkward, over-the-top, and completely, unapologetically ourselves. And if you’ve ever felt like the odd one out, trust me—you’re in very good company.

Can’t wait for you to hear this one. Stay weird. 💛
